Tuesday, December 23, 2003 {work: san bruno, ca} in the eleventh hour... it was late last night when i got back from angie's (i had dropped off her gift before she went home to san diego that night). i was pretty happy knowing that all i had to do was wrap all the remaining gifts i bought for christmas. i DID NOT want to brave the crowds the next day (the day before the day before christmas is a NIGHTMARE). i was worried that i wouldnt have enough time, given we were away for the week. i was even able to buy nico's gift without him knowing! [*pat self on back*]. it was difficult this year to figure out what to get him, but i paid attention in the last few weeks and i got a few ideas, i was pretty proud of myself... so as i was driving home, nico calls: nico: i was able to get all my shopping done today! WEAK! now what?! it's going to be crazy today..... =P * 10:02 AM * bernadette * * |

Monday, December 22, 2003 {work: san bruno, ca} what, christmas?! okay, so i thought i'd be starting an early christmas season by shopping in september. of course that plan didnt work out too well, cuz well, i didnt do it! [note to self: blogging something doesnt necessarily mean that i will follow... =P] nico and i did some last minute shopping and giftwrapping yesterday and you would think we're all done, but of course not! just a few more last minute things. since we were away for a week in a tropical island, it didnt feel too much like the holidays with the warm weather, and the shorts/tank top attire we sported (although there were decorations and holiday music everywhere!). so it just feels like christmas just snuck up on me. we got back from kauai early saturday morning. i'm so glad we had the weekend to recover! * 11:56 AM * bernadette * * |

Friday, December 19, 2003 {koloa country store & cafe, koloa, kauai, hi} wild rooster no, i dont mean wild turkey, i mean wild rooster. they are everywhere here in kauai! near our condo, in the street, at Kalaulau lookout at the TOP of Waimeia canyon (that's at 3600 feet!), at the "Secret Falls" on Wailua river (and that's like a 6 mile kayak up the river and a 2 mile hike into the woods to the falls), EVERYWHERE!! it's kind of comical, really. when nico and i were having a picnic lunch outside the museum/gift shop near Waimeia Canyon, a flock of them would hover around us to see if we would drop food. there had to be like 20 of them! it's pretty freaky having them hover around us while we ate - like any minute they would peck at us and attack! they are like the pigeons of kauai or something! nico faked them out by throwing a random clothespin (i dont know, it was just there) that he found on the picnic table. they would bum rush the thing, thinking it was food, but then would stop when the first rooster that got there didnt pick at it. they are smart to stop and not waste their time running to the fake food! we would chase them around too (i know, we're dorky like that) to watch as they change direction while running away from us. [we found out later that it's illegal to harass wild roosters. oops.] i would equate these birds to those dinosaurs you see in jurassic park when they are running across the plains - it's intriguing to watch not only these roosters, but also the other bird wildlife that we see... so far this trip has been relaxing and chill - i'm going to miss it. i find it hard to believe it's the christmas season, when the weather's so warm and balmy - it's been great! we fly home tonight. boo. ;) mele kalikimaka! * 10:53 AM * bernadette * * |

Tuesday, December 16, 2003 {koloa country store & cafe, koloa, kauai, hi} the art of doing nothing it's so nice to wake up with no plans, except to hang out at the beach... and well, do nothing! nico and i set off in our rented yellow jeep wrangler to the north side of kauai today. we hung out at hanalei beach - we read magazines, books, caught some rays, played in the surf, and people watched. the interesting highlight (lowlight?) of our trip was when we visited the kiluea lighthouse and wildlife preserve. it was a beautiful and scenic place, we were enjoying the view and watching the birds. we were going to enter the lighthouse to look at some interesting placards with some historical information about the lighthouse (it is a VERY small space). as we were waiting for this old man to finish taking a picture (his wife was calling for him from outside to hurry up), we heard a very foul sound indicating the man just passed gas... it lasted for a good 10 seconds!! his wife walked away (probably embarassed from his lack of self control), and we followed suit quickly, thinking god damn that was some flatulence on the guy!! uh, we're good, dont have to look at any historical stuff, thanks - we didnt stick around to smell the aftermath! LOL!! tomorrow, nico and i will explore/hike waimea canyon and hang out at the beach (some more). amara and romeo will be arriving in the next day, so we're trying to plan a kayak trip sometime thursday with them. the cool thing about this vacation is that we're able to plan things around friends who are either in the area (we hung out with kitchie in waikiki last saturday - she goes to school at the University of Hawaii) or on vacation too (amara & romeo are in for a wedding here in kauai). i'll be so sad when friday comes along and we have to go home, we're having so much fun! aloha! =D * 9:27 PM * bernadette * * |

Monday, December 15, 2003 {imperial hotel, waikiki, hi} "you are bad ass!" nico and i cheered on people at mile 11 and mile 22 at the honolulu marathon yesterday. we accompanied jake (nico's sister's bf), nick (nico's nephew), chris, and ben. the race started at 5am (o'dark hundred) sunday and we had to wake up really early to catch the shuttle to the mile markers. Nico's sister and friend mel (who got engaged to chris on friday! yay congrats!) participated in the marathon, running for the aids foundation. we held up signs saying "you are heros", "good job!" "Go Pia!" (nico's sister), and my personal favorite "You are Bad Ass!". it's amazing the response you get from a few words of encouragement, especially at mile 22 - they would point to the sign, smile, or even say "yeah, im bad ass!!!". one guy even said "you dont even know the half of it!". over 22,000 people participated in this event, and it was great knowing they all saw our signs along the marathon route. we met up with everyone at the hospitality tents at the finish line. mel made it in 5 hours and 35 minutes, and pia made it in 7 hours - her knees were killing her, but she was able to finish the race. congratulations to both and everyone who participated and finished, esp to pia for being so persistent and accomplishing your goals! =D you are bad ass!! * 11:55 AM * bernadette * * |

Tuesday, December 09, 2003 {work: san bruno, ca} poor me i will be missing out on our dept christmas party next week, in addition to the holiday volunteer event that precedes it. im not at all bummed that i'm missing the volunteer event because i already did some volunteering at glide memorial with some friends the night before thanksgiving (if you were watching the 10 o'clock news on KTVU channel 2 that night, you would have seen dorky me waving a really sharp knife ;)). but oh darn, im missing the party. i guess i'll get over it when im sipping a fruity beverage complete with umbrella when im lying on a beach, basking in the sun, in hawaii. poor, poor me. =D * 12:57 PM * bernadette * * |
